Romantic French house set in a Medieval village, this gorgeous three storey French styled house built in the 16th century with meter thick thick walls, is set in the heart of one of the prettiest villages in the Minervois. A quiet cul de sac leads to a double door entrance opening into a atmospheric entrance hall with guest cloak room.

On the ground floor a pretty well equipped kitchen awaits you to enjoy cooking with all the good local produce found at markets in the surrounding area. The stone stairway curves up to the second floor with bedroom, bathroom and study. The study has a lovely day bed for relaxing and enjoying the wonderful library filled with a collection of books from a well known writer who used this as his writing study. A set of stairs take you up to a bright and sunny lounge with French doors leading to a sunny south facing private rooftop terrace.

The house has been sensitively restored and is filled with beautiful things found at the local brocantes. The house offers super fast wi-fi, a telephone, TV with French and English channels. There are two stereo players, heaters in every room and a barbeque on the terrace. There is a dishwasher and washing machine in the kitchen and a heating rail in the bathroom. You will find original French linen on the double bed and soft towels in the bathroom.

The Area

Caunes Minervois is set in Minervois area which is well known for its fabulous wine and beautiful vineyards. The village is at the foot of the lush green Montagne Noir which offers a great opportunity to go hiking or meander around the Argent Double river that also runs through the village.

One can visit the amazing pink marble quarry on the outskirts of Caunes or just leisurely stroll through the interesting little stone streets in Caunes that lead to 5 good restaurants, two bakeries, two fountains and the grocery stores. As this is Cathar country there are some very interesting Cathar fortresses to be visited as well as some astonishingly beautiful abbeys. The abbey just down the road form L’Ecritoire is one of the most beautiful in this area and offers numerous classical concerts in summer.

Caunes is only 15 minutes from the famous Canal du Midi built in the 19th century which offers walks, cycling and boat rides. There is a good daily bus service to Carcasonne and nearby villages. The international airport at Carcasonne is only an easy 25 minute drive away and Carcasonne itself has a great market on Saturday mornings, and of course don’t miss the World Heritage site - La Cite, the famous Cathar castle ! If you feel like a long stroll on the beach, the Mediterranean is only 45 minutes away.

Getting There

Toulouse has an international airport, Blagnac and is 1.30hr from Caunes and is an easy drive once you are out of the main Toulouse city traffic.

Carcasonne airport is 30 minutes from Caunes and well serviced by Ryan Air from various cities in Europe.

Both airports have a wide selection of car rental offices.

We would welcome the opportunity to provide you with some feedback on our wonderful stay in that absolutely incredible home. As we mentioned, we were so delighted with the little home and it's careful and artful restoration -- it fit our needs perfectly. We appreciate so much all that you did to make it available to us, and to have been so welcoming, informative and supportive of our stay. We have almost no suggestions other than for first-timers like ourselves better written directions to get to Caunes directly from the Toulouse airport, with km and explicit directions on the round-a-bouts and between the small villages we passed through leading up to Caunes-Minervois (we are not experienced European drivers). We would love to return someday and we would certainly recommend any home that you have available for persons wishing a uniquely interesting and wonderful holiday stay in beautiful little Caunes-Minervois. Please keep us informed of rental availability of your property. With our appreciation and affection, David and Alison

Great village, wonderful cottage This is our second stay in Caunes Minervois and our first stay at this lovely cottage. I want to keep the secret to myself but that wouldn't be fair to those that have shared and helped me with other reviews/other places. This cottage has it all. It is completely outfitted with comfortable beds, a full kitchen outfit and all the accoutrements to make a leisurely stay. The kitchen is equipped with lovely antiques, fitting to the character of the home right down to the dishes. However, it is also equipped with modern equipment like a dishwasher. There is a washing machine tucked under the stairs and a folding rack and clothes line to hang clothes in the sun on the terrace. The master bed is very comfortable with French linens and comforters. The main bathroom has a large modern shower and is a good size. The best part of the home is the top floor that has great furnishings to relax, watch tv or listen to music (provided by a large selection of cd's). This area opens up to a fantastic private terrace that receives many hours of sunshine. There you can watch the birds soar by or listen to the quiet sounds of the village while sipping wine in the afternoon sun and not be overlooked. The town boasts some wonderful restaurants and there is a great bar at the town centre to sit amongst the locals in the evening. Love this romantic cottage..enjoy. Rick and Helen. Vancouver, Canada
